Heat from the attic melts the snow, the water runs to the cold edge and freezes into a ridge. That ridge pushes the next melt back under the shingles and into the house.
The metal that seals the chimney to the roof lifts, cracks or rusts. It is a common place for a slow leak that only shows up as a stain months later.
